One Year
I just completed one year of posting a blog every single week. YAAAAAY!!
[Visualize me dancing wildly, Elaine-from-Seinfeld style, around the living room!]
For some reason in early 2021 I thought, hey, I’ll start posting once a week. I didn’t have an end point in mind, but wanted to write (and share) regularly. And for no reason I can identify, I kept that up even though I had failed at that attempt every previous time (as evidenced by my very sporadic writing before February last year).
I’ve actually been loosely reflecting on this for a while, knowing the year anniversary was approaching, and wondering what made it different this time vs. the last (many) times before. Here’s what I learned about this process for myself:
Just post it. I think prior to last year, I got precious about wanting to have an amazing topic or perspective or something that would blow up the internet. Getting over that made it easier to just write and stop trying to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
Not every post is a winner. Even the ones I think people are really going to like and share don’t guarantee anything. But posting every week helped get over small feelings of failure if few people checked out the blog because I knew I had to move on and get going on next week. Keeping a schedule leaves surprisingly little time for wallowing.
Having something to show up for is huge. Working on my own means no one else dictates my time or the demands on it. Which is GREAT – AND, it also means that I can sometimes feel like I’m floating out in space with no boundaries or tethers. This offered some structure for focus and commitment, which is actually quite nice (especially when set by me).
I think this next week I’ll be reflecting on where I go from here. Do I keep up this habit? (Does this habit even matter??!) Do I change the frequency, the topics, the format? Something I’ve learned about habits in the past few years is that just because you create and form a habit doesn’t mean you have to keep it forever. Something to consider…
Raise your glass and celebrate!
