Getting in the mood

You know that feeling when the proverbial lightning strikes and you’re super motivated and energetic, getting stuff done right and left, knocking each thing out of the park?

Yeah, me neither…

Just kidding.  Although it is definitely one of those infrequent circumstances that we think – and hope – will happen a LOT more often than actually does.

It feels lucky when that energy is bestowed upon us but since we can’t wait around hoping it magically appears, sometimes we have to create our own energy.

I’ve been prepping one of my favorite workshops around time management and productivity for a client and was reminded of exactly this dynamic.  Much of that work – while more complex than just tips and tricks (although the tips and tricks are cool too!) – centers around how to make the best use of our time and energy and there are two ways I’ve found to summon energy for myself.

The Snowball Method and the Avalanche Method.

In the Snowball Method, you work on small, easy tasks that build some fast momentum and help you build energy from early wins.  That can help you move on to bigger and more important things.

On the other hand, the Avalanche Method has you tackle the biggest, most complicated thing first, and once that’s out of the way, the relief and energy is like cresting a big hill on a bike and freewheeling it all the way down.

Whenever that magic energy fairy visits you, welcome it with open arms.  But if it’s being an elusive little bugger, don’t lose hope…you can still create your own energy and momentum!
