First-day-of-school vibes

There’s something about walking into a Staples in August that just smells like fresh starts.

Maybe it’s the scent of freshly sharpened pencils (probably more imagined than real because who uses pencils these days?!) or the crinkle of plastic from a pack of trapper-keepers (any Lisa Frank fans out there?!).

Maybe it’s lingering in the aisles, running your fingers over the different notebooks and trying out the pens you’ll use to fill those notebooks.

Maybe it’s just that elusive feeling of possibility than hangs ripe in the ether.

While a true “first day of school” is long gone from my calendar, that energy lingers as August light starts to grow a little shorter and I set my sights on the fall and the closing of the year.  Still far enough away as not to induce anxiety, but reminding me all the same to think about how I want to experience the rest of this year, which continues on its steady march forward.

This is one of those natural reset moments in my year.

I noticed this week my desire to clear off my desk, to move things out of my line of sight, to re-organize my pantry, to give away some old clothes I haven’t worn in a long time…these are all physical things but I feel an energetic clearing that happens with each of them.  A way that I’m making space for the things that matter more – or most – to me to get in.

If you decided to use this time as a reset…what would you clear out and make space for?

Maybe it’s physical – sorting through that growing stack of unopened mail, the clothes you’re sure will fit this time, that box you think is filled with treasures but can’t actually remember what’s in it…

Maybe it’s digital – that file folder of all those PDFs you downloaded in that moment of interest but never read, the apps you never use but are just sure you will one day, the reminder that dings every week that you simply reschedule for the next week…

Maybe it’s mental – the “shoulds” that wear you out each day, the guilt you carry over something you already apologized for, or the vision of that great life you haven’t started building yet…

Whatever it might be…perhaps this seasonal moment could be your catalyst.  You don’t need a homeroom assignment or a new binder to claim it.  Just an attentiveness to the shift in the breeze, ready to propel you forward.
